The internet is full of work at home employment opportunities and the FDA can’t wait for you to submit your application. One slight problem, there is no compensation involved. Hope you didn’t wander over here looking for some extra disposable cash. Next problem, you didn’t really need to come here to enlist, you are already on the payroll. If you happen to use the sweetener Splenda, or sucralose as it appears in additive form, you already smack in the middle of one big research study being conducted to see just how bad this is for you. Take comfort, you are not really a rat, more a guinea pig in this study. You see, they already found it bad in rats, and didn’t quite have the time to get to us Guinea Pigs yet, as they needed it on the market, and fast.

You represent the nice furry, tan and white guinea pig with white whiskers. One step up the chain removed from rats, and a bit behind the rabbits and dogs as far as the testing process goes on the road to safety. Wait a minute, doesn’t the FDA go through years and years of clinical trails and extensive research studies before allowing any product on the market to ensure its safety? Sure, in a perfect world, that might be the case. Not too many people pull up to the curb at the FDA and confuse it with never never-land. It is an imperfect government agency that, like any other bureaucracy, is full of political pressure and incompetence.

The food and drug industry has hundreds of millions to pour into lobbyists. They pressure the politicians and they pull favors and pressure the FDA. The tried and true method that has been around since our country was founded. If you are a top flight research scientist in your field, you are working for the outside industries as the pay is too good to pass up on. The majority of research the FDA must sift through in the approval process was done by the company seeking approval. Research studies take money, time and personnel which the FDA is poorly lacking in. Would you expect any company seeking approval to submit a stack of data that concludes their product is unsafe or harmful? The data may be buried in some of it, but it is up to the under-staffed FDA to dig it out and it is rarely done. We, as consumers, become the needed study after it is on the market. We start dying or getting sick, they start looking back at the studies they needed to in the first place.

Level Ferret

How to keep ferret smell level low?
How would someone go about keeping the smell level from ferrets as low as possible?
I’ve had two ferrets, and I found that the best way to keep the musky smell to a minimum was to keep the cage clean. Use scoopable litter and scoop out their box/pan daily, or as often as possible. (I can’t remember where I read this but NEVER use pine or cedar cat litter, as the aromatic oils from the wood might cause respiratory problems.) Launder any bedding/hammocks/whatever that they have at least once every two weeks. Also wash any toys regularly.
Contrary to popular misconception the oftener you bathe your little guys and/or gals the stronger (read: worse) the smell will get. Even the gentlest ferret shampoos strip their skin and fur of the natural oils the skin makes to keep the hairs healthy. While you might think this makes the muskiness better it actually makes it worse for a little while, their skin overcompensates by making more oil and therefore more of the scent that some people find offensive. I never bathed my guys more than once every 2-3 months – unless they got into something stinky or dirty (watch out for potted plants!!!) and they smelled fine! You might feel the need to do it more or less often, depending on your (or your roommate’s or parents’) tolerance for the odor, which some people (like me) don’t particularly mind.
But when you do give them a bath, let ‘em play in the sink/tub until they get bored of, it if they want to. If you’ve got one that likes playing in the water, it is soooooo cute and funny to watch ‘em running and splashing in there! Toss in a toy or two that floats and watch the fun ensue!

Should I get a rat or guinea pig as a pet?
I’ve been wanting a guinea pig for some time now. My dad finally agreed to let me have one. I also want a rat. What would make a more enjoyable pet? I can spare 2-3 hours a day to maintain it. I just want a friendly companion. I already have a large cage that would work for either one.

ok so im going to vacation soon and its kinda last minute and im letting someone take care of my hamster for a week and Im about to run out is it okay to feed him rat/mouse food because i have a huge bag and i dunno wat to do!
Its fine, hamsters, rats, and mice can basically eat the same stuff. most of the time, bigger animals like rats and hamsters have bigger chunkier food than mice, but it should be fine. your hampster will most likely love the corn kernels, sunflower seeds, and other stuff in rodent food.

Sugar Glider Rat

Which is the better pet- A rat or a sugar glider?
Give me your answer and a reason why.I cant decide on which to go for, what are the good and bad qualities of each pet?
lol and to those who think getting a rat is bad i already have a snake and a lizard(a cat and 2 mice which arent so bad) the exotic pets make great pets i think!
I love both my glider and my rat very much but I have to say between the two I would go with the rat.
Gliders live longer *13yrs* but they have sharp claws that feel like little needles and they bite. Also they only come out at night and when you do get them up they turn into a little ball of lightning.
Rats on the other hand are smarter and more social. They sleep when you are away not during they day when you want to play. Also they smell a hundred times better than a glider.
My rat has never bit me.
If you do go with the glider then bye a wheel, they love them.
If you bye a rat, keep lots of carrots around, they love carrots.
Good luck with whatever you pick. ^.^

my rat is getting depressed and i want to get him a friend. my mom said either a guinea pig or a big hampster. NOTHING ELSE!!!! and i would like the reasons for getting a hampster or guinea pig. and a reason for not getting a hampster or guinea pig!! THANKS!!! >
Well, you can’t literally put either of those, WITH a rat.
The rat will kill a hamster, and can severely harm a guinea pig, if the guinea pig doesn’t hurt the rat first.

Chinchilla, Sugar Glider, and a Cat?
Marvin, my chinchilla, and Bob, my sugar glider, have been teaming up on my cat, Tom. They pick on him constantly. Tom has no idea what to do. he tries to run but they corner him. Bob dive bombs him from the ceiling fan, Marvin uses his wall bounce to cut him off and then they verbally assault him.
How can I get this behavior to stop? I don’t want Tom to kill my rodents, but I want him to stand up for himself and stop acting like a coward. I’d like them to get along, but Tom is acting like a wuss.

Rat Traps
Many different types of rat traps are available on the market today from live catch traps to traditional break-back traps.
The live catch traps on a whole tend to be cage traps. The rat is tempted into the cage with a bait (many types of bait will work from chocolate to cereals). The bait is placed onto the platform or hook (depending on the design), as the rat is feeding it will trigger the trap and the cage door will close trapping the rat inside.
Knowing your pests
The common rat – rattus norvegicus has been around since the early 18th century, these rats can be found in both urban and rural areas, they can be found both indoors and outdoors and often associated with sewer systems.

Sugar gliders health is one of the essential factors that you must be aware of when you are taking these gliders as pets. Having a vet who deals with exotic pets is the most essential step to maintain a good and healthy pet. Most vets do not actually deal with exotic pets and will not able to help you if something is wrong.
You can call you local veterinarian offices and find out if it can provide proper care to meet the needs of your sugar glider. Since sugar gliders are exotic, it can be a hard task to look for a better vet that is appropriate to care for it. If you only got your pet from a pet store or a breeder, you may ask who’s the vet they use for sugar glider health care.
Keep in mind that these exotic pets are still new for being pets. Not everything single thing about it are already known to people. Never try to identify or treat a sugar glider by yourself, you must get a licensed veterinarian to always be contacted for any concerns or even problems that is associated with your pet. Conversely, here are some usual issues about the sugar gliders health that could affect you cuddly pets.

Chinchilla Sugar

What’s the best way to build your own chinchilla or sugar glider habitat?
I’m looking to adopt a sugar glider or chinchilla as a pet. Additionally, I will need a habitat. Has anyone had any experience building their own habitat for either pet?
Sugar gliders need an adequate size cage – at least 20 x 20 x 30 inches. A taller cage is better than a wider one because sugar gliders love to climb. Wire cages are best and commercial bird cages work well. You don’t want to use screen door mesh wire, as this is too small and your pet can easily get his claws caught in it. Cages with removable trays are also very handy, because they are easy to clean.
Keep the cage where your sugar glider won’t experience large differences in temperature (usually the best place is indoors). Since they are nocturnal, sleeping during the day, you will want to put the cage somewhere out of the way where it won’t be disturbed by people’s daily comings and goings. But do make sure to keep him where he can see whether it is night or day, so as to not mess up his biological clock.
Inside the cage provide a nesting box where your sugar glider can sleep during the day. Put aspen shavings, shredded paper, or an old cloth in the nesting box for more comfortable sleep. Put shavings on the bottom of the cage also, to absorb droppings and pushed out food. DO NOT use cedar shavings – these can cause respiratory problems. It is also thought that pine bedding may cause problems as well.
To make your sugar glider’s habitat more natural, it is a great idea to put branches in the cage (many bird perches work great, also). Just be sure that the branches you use are clean and don’t have any chemical residues left on them.
Including toys in the cage will give your pet exercise and enjoyment. Many bird toys work great, and also hollow logs or pipes that they can explore and hide in.

If you are thinking of adding a pet to your household then why not consider a Cavy. These small animals can make wonderful pets. Here are the top five reasons why owning Guinea Pigs for pets is beneficial and in some cases surprising benefits.
Space
These small pets do not require a large amount of space to be housed in.
- The cage for a single guinea pig should be no less than 7.5 square feet. It isn’t allot of space to have the benefits of ownership. Check with your zoning that you are allowed to have pets, specifically Guinea Pigs
- Guinea pigs spend a good deal of their time in their own space and enjoy time out of the cage. When you let your guinea pig out of the cage to enjoy play time activities, this doesn’t have to be large amount of extra space.

Will it do any harm to my hamster? and is the mice and rat cage too small for a dwarf hamster?
Most food for small rodents is safe for consumption by all small rodents. If you do a search for rat food you find that most of the food is all purpose food for any type of small animal.

Why does my guinea pig pee on my bed?
Whenever I take my guinea pig out and place her on my bed, she almost immediately pees. However, when she’s out and about on the floor or I’m holding her; she doesn’t pee for like an hour. I just really want to know why she does it. Like is it because it smells like me or something? I read before that Guinea Pigs pee in the sleeping spaces.
She is not trained, that’s why.
Make her go pee pee first, or put her back in her cage after she does that on your bed. Too hard a deal? Just don’t place her on your bed, if she does not behave!

Hamster Mouse Mice

I would like for them to fit inside my cages. (I have Critter Trail 1 and another plastic cage- not sure what it is…)
You can go to any pet store and get toys made for hamsters or ferrets.
You can also get bird toys that hang in the cage. The mice love them and they toys are more durrable than most small animal toys.
There are also a lot of toys that you can home make, like obsitcal courses…using paper towel rolls, spare cloth, random things laying around the house…
A digging box is great for out of the cage…You fill a box with dirt or sand (or shredded paper to keep it from being messy) and hide treats through it….
Mice can make toys out of almost anything…
