Taking Care of Your Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are a rather unique creature that also have a very interesting history. They, at one time, existed in the wild and they were also raised by Inca Indians in Peru. Several centuries ago, this unique animal was also introduced in Europe as a pet. Many people still enjoy having the guinea pig as a pet, both because of its gentle nature and because of what it is able to bring to a family. If you love guinea pigs yourself and would like to have one as a pet, there are a number of things for you to consider which can really help to make your pet as happy and healthy as possible.

As with most types of animals, your guinea pig is going to need to eat a well-balanced diet in order to remain healthy. Much of the commercially available Guinea Pig Food is going to suffice in this regard, but many people also like to supplement the Guinea Pig Diet in order to provide them with additional nutrients and some interesting eating. Feeding them alfalfa, hay, various types of sprouts and other raw vegetables from the refrigerator is always an excellent choice for these animals. Make sure that whatever you feed them, however, is pesticide free.

Interestingly enough, a guinea pig is unable to produce its own vitamin C as many other animals in the wild are able to do. Humans share this inability with the guinea pig, and just as you would want to supplement your own source of vitamin C, you would want to make sure that your guinea pig has a ready supply of it available as well. Sprinkle a little bit of vitamin C on their food on a daily basis, and it will help to keep your guinea pigs as healthy as possible.

Four Tips for Buying Guinea Pig Cages

It’s important that you provide your cavy with proper housing like a cage.  This will prompt him to be more active and healthier.  There are a few things you need to consider when buying Guinea Pig Cages.  Some of these things include size, floor, and design.  This article will give you a few tips for buying a cage for a guinea pig.

Size

Size is one of the most important considerations.  Cavies need a lot of space to run around.  If you want him to be more active, then you should buy the largest cage possible.  At the very least, the one you choose should be 18 inches wide and 14 inches high.  Some pigs like to jump, so relatively tall walls will prevent them from escaping.

What to Consider Before Getting Your Pet Rabbit

Rabbits have been popularly kept as pets in Western nations since the 1800s. Rabbits can adjust well to indoor life, and can even be litter box trained. Like all pets, rabbits need a considerable amount of care and attention.

Often people purchase rabbits from a breeder. Many people prefer breeders under suspicion that some pet stores sell cross bred rabbits. Such a breeder who has a litter of young rabbits available for sale can be found in the newspaper classified ads listed under “Pets” or “Livestock.” Some can be found through rabbit breeders’ club publications or through rabbit-related magazines, which often include a breeder listing. With the advent of the Internet, many breeders advertise their stock online.

Finding a local rabbit breeder is generally preferred to shipping rabbits for long distances, as it can be stressful for the animal. Many pet shops nearly always carry smaller breeds of rabbit such as the Netherland dwarf, the Holland lop, and the Mini-Rex. These breeds, although smaller than ‘normal’ rabbits, still live long and healthy lives. A point to note is that often smaller breeds of rabbits are prone to tooth problems such as malocclusion.

Rabbit rescue organizations or a local humane society are increasingly common places to find adult rabbits, who may already be spayed or neutered and docile from handling. Though most rescued rabbits are healthy, some may require special care for health conditions or behavioral problems resulting from prior abuse.

Can we keep a rat and a rabbit in the same hutch?

We have a rat in a cage and have just got a rabbit that will stay in its own hutch. Can we put the rat and rabbit together in the hutch without any problems?

Rats are predators. No. The will harm each other. And please get another rat for your rat to have a friend. They are extremely social creatures and need constant same species companionship. They get very lonely and might get depressed or even aggressive without one. For the happiness of your pet, please get it a friend.

A big and small guinea pig?

Well we have these 2 Guinea Pigs that are about a couple of months old and we are planning to get another guinea pig next year for them when we make a big C&C cage. By than the Guinea Pigs will be bigger and where we adopt our guinea pigs they only have baby ones that are about 3 – 4 months, they are small so I’m worried next year when the new guinea pig lives with my other guinea pigs.. is it ok? Will the baby be afraid or scared of them or something?

Sure the baby will be afraid and scared as he has just lost everyone that he knows. It often works better if you have different sizes because the hierarchy is often sorted out quicker, with the bigger piggys being the boss. Make sure that you quarantine the new guinea pig first, you have to scroll down past the neuter stuff:

How can I build an indoor rabbit hutch that is tall and slender like a bookcase with ramps?

I need to build an indoor rabbit hutch that is tall and slender like a bookcase with ramps.
I have very limited space for my rabbit, so I had an idea to make it very tall and secured to a wall instead of taking up floor space. My rabbit will only be in this cage during the night. I have seen a design used like this for cats but not a cage, just ramps and long walkways for them to walk on. I just need to know if this is possible and how to get started.

^yes, just buy a cheap bookcase n convert it.. Needs a little diy, but works wonders, my rabbit’s having fun! Just remember to but womethin on the front of it… Someone ws having a blonde moment n left the bookcase open, and was wondering why her rabbits were constantly on the floor.. :P
so, a bookcase with slides, ladders, tubes… :)

Want makes an easier to care for pet, a rabbit or Chinchilla?

What makes an easier pet, rabbit or chinchilla? and if a rabbit (which I believe so) how can I talk my sister out of getting a chinchilla (she wants one real bad, but is a college student and doesn’t have enough time yet can still provide about 3 hours of attention daily w/out my help which I will be doing.)
Also support you answers with facts please!!!

i believe a rabbit is easier because with a chinchilla you have to make sure not to get it wet cuz it can die if it gets wet. also they cost alot more than a rabbit. the average price for a chinchilla is about $110 some are even more then that!….and they are real skiddish, they dont like to be held as much….but with a rabbit it can hop around, it can get wet(if needed to be cleaned, you still shouldn’t clean them that much only clean small animals after they have been sick to help them) and you can hold them. I myself am a rabbit owner and i just cant get enough of them! Don’t listen to people when they say a certain animal gets sick more than the other….that only happends if you dont take care of it the right way….any animals can get sick!….but people who care keep them from dieing….and don’t get a pet if you are not willing to give it the love and ATTENTION it needs!

Guinea Pigs didn’t always have the renowned reputation for being a perfect, quiet pet that doesn’t make much mess. They were used long ago by the Inca tribes of Peru as a source of meat and were bred to do just that.

They are not an animal that is native to North America and therefore, it is speculated and probably true that sailors took the furry critters along on they voyages as pets. It is also speculated that in this, lie the reason for guineas pigs to have gotten the name because the sailors who brought them along as pets also sold the creatures for a ‘guinea’. They also make few sounds but of the ones they do, they squeak and squeal like a baby pig.

Natural Habitat

Guinea Pigs are actually believed to come from South America and there are still many species today that can be found. The South American pigs are thought to be living in very large family groups that can be found living in the foliage and hiding in long grass. The pigs don’t burrow and hide from other creatures because they hide in grass and trees to escape their enemies. It could be that guinea pigs are just a bit lazy because in their own natural habitat, they borrow holes that are abandoned by other diggers.

Rabbit Cage

Rabbit Cage
If I was to build a rabbit cage out of wood, is this safe for the rabbit?

I am planning on building a 2-3 story cage for a rabbit. I have heard that some types of wood are not good for a rabbit. Is there any wood that is safe? How can I prevent or discourage a rabbit from chewing the wood?

I’d recommend avoiding building the cage out of treated wood except for the bottom of the hutch legs (where they meet the ground, to prevent them from rotting, you may want to place stepping stones under the legs to keep the hutch from sinking over time). Treated wood contains arsenic which can be unhealthy for your rabbit to eat. Hardwoods are fine and so is regular pine. If you build it out of 2×4′s, and plywood don’t worry, it will take them a long while (years and years) to chew through the wood to the point of escaping. I had my rabbit hutches for over 20 years and they never chewed through. The cage wire will rust out long before they chew through the wood. Some of the main things you want to consider though is will it be easy to get your rabbit in and out of the cage. Will the cage be easy to clean out? Is the hutch in the shade to keep the rabbits cool in the summer? Is it built well enough to keep dogs out? Does your breed require a solid bottom floor (heavy weight breed) or can it utilize a wire bottom floor (light weight breed)? Wire bottom floors are much easier to clean, but if you have a heavy breed it will be hard on their feet and tend to give them sore hocks. Don’t use chicken wire for the cage or any kind of thin wire. I recommend using rabbit cage wire, check out Da-mars or Klubertanz online for rabbit cage wire. Use 1″x2″ wire for the sides and for the flooring if you’re going to use wire us 1/2″x1″ wire with a heavier gauge wire. Galvanized AFTER-WELDED wire is much better. If it’s galvanized before welded, it will rust much quicker. Another thing I recommend is build an extended roof on it. You’ll be thankful you did on those rainy nights when you have to go out in the rain to feed your rabbits. In the summer, your cage should be open (just wire) on two sides (the front and the back). In the winter, you want three sides closed in to prevent a wind draft and pneumonia. That can be done by tacking a piece of plywood, paneling or thick plastic on the back. Last of all, set a post 3-4 feet deep in the ground and brace your hutch against the post. The first couple of years I was raising rabbits we didn’t do that and a couple bad storms came in and blew the hutches over in the middle of the night. It’s no fun chasing your rabbits in the middle of a rainy night or the next day and trying to tip a rabbit hutch back upright. Thankfully we had a tractor to tip them upright.

There is no need to leave a pet behind when you move. You can take your pets with you, but you need to do some research. One of the easiest moving methods to use when you have pets is a moving truck rental.

There are a variety of different benefits to using a moving truck rental for your relocation project. The biggest benefit of all is the flexibility that you will have when moving your things. If you have pets, then you will need this flexibility. When moving small animals, you need to have that extra room in the cab or in another vehicle to transport them.

Can you recommend an indoor rabbit hutch suitable for 2 rabbits?

I am looking for an indoor rabbit hutch made of plastic rather than wood to help reduce any smells.

I cant find one anywhere other than small ones for one rabbit.. and they are smaller than the cages.

Guinea Pig Small

Guinea Pig Small
Guinea Pig Small
guinea pig small parts of hair?

my guinea pig doesn’t have the skin irritated although he seems to have his hair cut to half in one part where he’s been bitting himself. could it still be mite or just simple lice?
(he’s not bitting me anymore, he’s more quiet now, and cute as always.) what could it be, is this natural?

It’s not “normal,” per se, but it’s not unheard of. Has your pig been treated for mites? If so, the treatment should have eliminated any lice as well. Mites are microscopic, so you won’t physically see them, but lice are NOT – you CAN see them. If you haven’t already treated your piggie, go ahead and do so.
