Guinea Pigs – The History and Origins of the Guinea Pig

Guinea Pigs and humans share a history of more than 10,000 years. The cavy originated in Central and South America. In the wild, their domain extended throughout Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The cavy was domesticated by the Inca Indians somewhere around 7,000 or 8,000 years ago. They were used as not only a food source but also as a sacrificial animal – sacrificed to the sun god – in religious ceremonies.

In the wild, guinea pigs lived in small groups or herds. For this reason, they are inherently social creatures and do not do well if kept in solitude. It is recommended that they be kept at least in pairs.

Cavies first made their way back to Europe on the ships of Spanish conquistadores during the 1500s. They eventually also came to Holland, England and France. At first, these pets were reserved only for the wealthy and elite. They were much too expensive for anyone but the rich. But their ability to reproduce so quickly soon made the European supply of guinea pigs swell. As the price fell, popularity of the little beast increased as they became affordable to the common people of Europe. It was not until the 1800s – more than 300 years after it landed in Europe – that the cavy finally made its way to the United States.

Grooming A Guinea Pig-How To

The best thing you can do is to give your guinea pig hard food to chew on: carrots and other hard vegetables, chew firewood or blocks, or even tree brushwood. If you do remark that your guinea pig’s teeth are becoming too long, then its essential to take him to a vet and get them trimmed down. Never try to lower guinea’s teeth yourself! Your vet will have the correct tools and experience to safely sleek the teeth to a typical piece.

Another tricky situation that sometimes arises with guinea’s teeth, particularly if they aren’t receiving all the vitamins they need in their diet, is that the tips of teeth may desolve off. This can also make it tough for them to eat. Take your cavy to the vet and feed him a softer diet until the fang grows back suitably.

Guinea’s mustache also needs to be taken care of commonly. Guinea’s with a longer coat require more grooming than little-haired cavies.

Guinea Pigs by Other Names?

Would a Guinea Pig By Any Other Name be So Cute?

Why are Guinea Pigs called guinea pigs? Is it maybe because they originated in New Guinea? Do they belong to the pig family? The answer is ‘no’, and ‘no’ again. So, if that’s the case, then why are guinea pigs called guinea pigs then? There are a number of theories that try to address the question of the unusual name.

First, the origin of guinea in guinea pig. One theory posits that the animals were brought to Europe by way of Guinea, thus leading people to believe that they had originated there. Another theory is the word “guinea” is actually derived from Guiana, an area in South America; albeit it remains unclear wether the misspelling was intentional or merely a corruption of the original name. A third theory suggests that guinea pigs were named so because when they were originally sold in Great Britain, they were valued at one guinea. A guinea is an old British coin with a value of twenty one shillings. Unfortunately, this theory is based on a common misperception, as the first guinea pig was described in 1554 by a Swiss naturalist named Konrad Gesner, more than a century before the first guinea coin was tendered.

There are just as many theories regarding the pig in guinea pig than for the origin of guinea in guinea pigs. One theory suggests they are named pigs because of the snort-like noises guinea pigs make when excited or happy. Another theory posits that they were named pigs because of their resemblance to small pigs, or because of their eating habits. Whatever the reason, the English language is not the only one that refers to “pigginess”. Scientists refer to guinea pigs as cavia porcellus; and porcellus is Latin for little pig. In the German language, guinea pigs are called Meerschweinchen (which is translated as little sea pigs). The origin of the name in German is probably because guinea pigs were treasured as an easily available and transportable source of fresh meat for sailing ships traveling long distances in the new world. Guinea pigs have a long history of serving as provisions. The Inkas treasured guinea pigs as a food source, but also slaughtered them in massed as ritual offerings to the gods. The Russian and Polish names for guinea pigs are similar to the German one, morskaya svinka and winka morska respectively; while the Dutch call them guinees biggetje (Guinean piglet). In the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark they are called marsvin, which combines the Latin word for ocean “mare” with svin, meaning pig.

Ideally, your guinea pig’s enclose should be at slightest 2 discharge feet per guinea pig, but the more topic you provide for your pet, the happier he or she will be. Guinea Pigs – a Cute Little Pet Living a Lie

True or false: Guinea Pigs are small, hybrid animals that have been cultivated and cross-bred from wild pigs originally captured on the island of New Guinea. The fact that this animal was originally cross-bred in the laboratory to establish a pig breed that was both of friendly disposition and small enough to keep as a house pet, is the reason that the guinea pig still remains associated with labs in most of our minds today.

Yes – I made all of that up. Guinea pigs are no more pigs from New Guinea than a pineapple is a Granny Smith sprouting from a pine tree. It’s all a sad, misleading deception. Guinea pigs are neither pigs nor are they associated with New Guinea, Old Guinea, YoungAdult Guinea nor any other Guinea that we know of for that matter.

So, as our title suggests, the name “guinea pig” is an outright lie. These little animals are not some form of small mutant dwarf pig. That would be silly (they are actually tiny child-actors wearing tiny mutant dwarf pig costumes). Okay, I made that up too. They are actually rodents from the genus Cavia (which is the reason they are also referred to as Cavies). As rodents, they are related to chinchillas and porcupines – not hogs and boars.

Four Tips for Buying Guinea Pig Cages

It’s important that you provide your cavy with proper housing like a cage.  This will prompt him to be more active and healthier.  There are a few things you need to consider when buying Guinea Pig Cages.  Some of these things include size, floor, and design.  This article will give you a few tips for buying a cage for a guinea pig.

Size

Size is one of the most important considerations.  Cavies need a lot of space to run around.  If you want him to be more active, then you should buy the largest cage possible.  At the very least, the one you choose should be 18 inches wide and 14 inches high.  Some pigs like to jump, so relatively tall walls will prevent them from escaping.

Don’t Forget the Kids’ Leggings When You Shop For Baby Boy Clothes

Sometimes parents of newborns and young toddlers forget that certain clothes aren’t going to appear very boy-ish, take the example of baby leggings. When you think, “baby boy clothes,” kids leggings don’t automatically shoot to the top of your list, now do they? That’s understandable, but here are two reasons you need to re-consider. First off, baby clothes are exactly that: clothes for the littlest of the bunch: babies. If there’s one thing that babies love, it’s milk, of course! In a very distant “second” would be the other thing they love: it’s comfort. Babies love to be snuggled up close to mom or dad, and the last thing they want is to be uncomfortable. One of the best resources in your wardrobe will be the leggings you can pick up in finer children’s clothing stores, and the best place to find one (unless you live in New York or Milan, that is) is to shop online. The main points that you want to keep in mind are:

  • Are these leggings comfortable?
  • Are they quality-made, from sources I can trust?

<<=======IE: DO THEY PASS INDUSTRY SAFETY/QUALITY STANDARDS Do they fit well on my son? Does my son look astoundingly cute or what?

Get Peace of Mind for Your Faithful Friend with Pet Insurance

The people of the United Kingdom are famous for their love of animals – with thousands of pet owners in households across the country. Indeed, a recent piece of research suggested that the number of domestic cats and dogs in the UK alone was much larger than first imagined, with reportedly over a quarter of UK households having a pet cat and as much as 31% having at least one pet dog under their roof. Add to this other smaller pets such as rabbits, Guinea Pigs and hamsters and it is clear to see how much time UK residents have for their furry companions.

With so much time and care given to cats and dogs in particular, and with such long term friendships formed by owners with these pets, it is understandable that animal lovers can become particularly attached to their favourite pet over a number of years. So strong is the bond between pet and master, it is very often the case that if the animal becomes ill or has an accident then many pet owners will need to lay out hundreds of pounds for veterinary bills. Vaccinations are also a costly part of raising a cat or dog, and with the need for further additional booster injections the costs can quickly mount up.

With the difficulties of the current economic climate, finding the cash for vet’s bills can be very difficult, and as such more and more pet owners are taking out pet insurance for greater peace of mind and cover against large and unplanned for vet expenses. To find the best deals on pet insurance before you start looking for pets for sale.

Guinea Pigs Health Problems – How to Deal With Them?

When you first decide to bring a guinea pig into your home, you should be sure that there is a vet who specializes in small pet care in your immediate area. Many people may not consider the expense of veterinary care for other small pets like hamsters or gerbils who live an average of two years, but Guinea Pigs are not disposal pets. Because they can live on average 4-8 years, they should be considered long-term members of your family, just like a dog or a cat.

Why should you find a vet this early? Because guinea pigs can become ill quickly and deteoriorate rapidly. If you wait to try to find a vet after your pet becomes ill and run into difficulties, it might be too late to save your guinea pig.

With dogs or cats, owners generally take them in for a check-up when its time to renew their shots. Since guinea pigs don’t need shots, it can be easy to take their good health for granted. Your guinea pig should see his or her vet at least once a year as well.

Guinea Pigs Toys – What Does your Piggie Like?

Pets like their toys, and guinea pigs are no exception. However, they do get bored easily if they only have the same toys to play with over and over again, so it’s nice to give them a lot of variety.

There are some toys made just for guinea pigs, such as Bounce Back toys (you place a treat inside the toy and the cavy knocks it down to get to the treat, then it bounces right back up again). At only $6 or so, it’s an affordable purchase and most guinea pigs seem to like it.

Besides toys made just for guinea pigs, you’ll also find that many items designed for rabbits and ferrets can be enjoyed by your pet as well. Some guinea pigs also enjoy playing with cat and bird toys, but you must be cautious when using these items since they can be easily broken and swallowed by your pet.

Of course, you don’t have to go out to your local pet stores in order to gather toys for your guinea pig. Many items that you have lying around your house would also be perfect. Let me give you some examples:

Choosing The Best Guinea Pig Food

Believe it or not, cavies are pickier eaters than little kids! At a very early age a cavy will develop it’s own food preferences, and once it decides what it likes it is very hard to get them to change their diets. A sudden change in their diet can cause so much stress to your cavy that it may stop eating and drinking altogether. This refusal to accept changes in their diets sometimes results in cavies starving themselves to death. Don’t let this worry you however. You can avoid this type of problem by feeding your cavy a balanced and healthy diet from the time it is young.

Unlike many rodents which are omnivores, cavies are herbivores. They are strict vegetarians. And they have very unique and specific nutritional requirements quite different from other types of rodents. If your cavy doesn’t receive proper nutrition, or a balanced diet, it may suffer from a variety of health problems, and could even lead to early death.
