Guinea Pig Sounds

One thing that is adorable about Guinea Pigs some of the sounds that they can make. You will often hear Guinea Pigs purr, whistle, and rattle their teeth.  They also make a really cute weeping sound.  Once you understand what all of the different sounds mean, you start to know what your guinea pig is trying to tell you.

The most common sound new guinea pig owner’s might hear is the guinea pigs typical whistling sound.  This is also referred to as a weeping sound. This can actually mean several things.

One might be that your guinea pig is hungry, or it could mean that your guinea pig is trying to tell you something. Some guinea pigs will sometimes get used to hearing the refrigerator open right before getting fresh fruits or veggies, and will associate the refrigerator with the treat. Over time, your guinea pig may start to weep when he hears the refrigerator open.

You may also hear your guinea pig making some low rattling sounds. This is a sound they usually make when they are with other guinea pigs, and they may be just saying “hi” or they may they may be trying to prove that they are “the boss”.

Sometime they may make this low rumbling sound when they feel threatened around other guinea pigs.

Sometimes while in their cage, especially if you have more than one guinea pig, you may hear what sounds like rattling teeth. This is usually considered a warning sign to other guinea pigs.many times if you have one guinea pig established in the home, and then try to add a new one, the one who already belong to the home will feel territorial.

It is not a good idea to put too many guinea pigs in the same cage, especially 2 or more males. If you do and you hear this clacking teeth sound, you’ll need to separate them as they fight may soon break out.

Another sound that you may hear from your guinea pig, and one of the most favorite ones, is when your guinea pig purrs. Each guinea pig tends to have his own thing that will make them purr.

Some guinea pigs will purr when you scratch their nose, some will purr when you scratch their back, and others might like to be rubbed bedhind the ears.  Regardless of what makes your guinea pig per, this is usually one of the most favorite Guinea Pig Sounds.
