Guinea Pig Cages – What to look for when buying one

Guinea Pigs at Pets Corner

Home sweet home. Your guinea pig will spend a good bit of his day in his cage, so be sure if it’s the best quality that you can afford. There are several things to look for when picking out your Guinea Pigs cage, and we will tell you what to look for.

Let’s talk about the size of the cage 1st. Because your guinea pig will spend a part of his day in his cage, be sure that he has plenty of room to run. Ideally, you want about 6 ft.² of room in the cage. Sometimes however, it may not be possible to find a cage of this size.  if you must go with a smaller cage, you want to be sure to let your guinea pig out of the cage to get some exercise each day.

A very important factor when picking out your guinea pig cage is air circulation.  Wire cages are best for this. You should not use an aquarium for your Guinea Pigs home.  This will not allow adequate air circulation.

Although you do want to be sure that your guinea pigs cage has adequate air circulation, do not place his cage near an air conditioner vent or any other type of draft.

The floor of the guinea pig cage should not be wire. This would make it very difficult for your guinea pig to walk and can hurt his feet. The best type of flooring for your guinea pigs cage would be plastic, or some other washable surface. You would not want to use wood as this cannot be cleaned easily.

Just as important as the sides in the bottom of the cage, the top is also important. This is especially true if you have other pets in the home such as dogs or cats. You’ll want to make sure that the top is adequately covered, again ideally with wire, so that these other animals cannot get to your guinea pig.

And again, to protect your pet from drafts, it’s best not to put the guinea pig cage on the floor. Try to find a sturdy table or stand for the cage.  your guinea pig will also enjoy this better, as they would be able to see you better. By following these guidelines, you should be able to get the ideal home set up for your guinea pig.
