Here’s how to make sure your furry friend is ready too!

The idea of a guinea pig show may seem amusing, even ridiculous to some. However, the truth is these shows can be extremely entertaining, not to mention lucrative for the lucky winner! Many shows are organized by local Cavy breeding clubs or Agricultural organization. They can include anything from Guinea Pig Costumes, to a parade or pampered and highly groomed Guinea Pigs! Much like a dog show, Guinea Pig Shows often involve a group of judges that evaluate a pig’s fur, teeth and overall appearance and health. If you are considering placing your beloved pig into a local show here are some tips to keep in mind;

1. Make sure to handle your guinea pig as much as possible. It is very common for Guinea Pigs to be passed from judge to judge during a show, so it is also important that your pig is comfortable being held by strangers!

2. Proper grooming is probably the most important step in preparing for a guinea pig show. Your pet’s fur should be brushed and combed and any dried mess which is caught in their fur should be removed. It is also a good idea to make sure that your guinea pig’s eyes, mouth and ears are cleaned before the competition.

3. Additional grooming such as nail trimming should also be completed a few days before the guinea pig show.

4. Some serious Guinea Pig Breeders and show enthusiasts will train their guinea pig to lie still while being judged. This can be hard for inexperienced pig owners and takes time as well as commitment and patience.

5. Only dress your guinea pig in a costume or in tiny sized accessories if required to participate in your specific show. If the judges do not request a dress-up segment, be sure to leave you miniature clown suit at home!

6. Encourage your furry friend when he or she does well during their competition! Positive reinforcement and affection will increase you chances of taking home “best in the guinea pig show”.
