Ever wondered what all those Guinea Pig Noises are for? Ever wondered if there was a reason for all that squeaking, chattering, cooing, and purring? Believe it or not, the little fur-balls have a rather complicated communication system, both for others of the similar species or for their human owners!

The more common sounds include wheeking, purring, and cooing. Wheeking, or weeping as it is sometimes called, is often used as a call for attention or food. More often than not, it is made in excitement or anticipation of a yummy treat or veggie. This sound can be triggered by recognition of the owner, the sound of an opening refridgerater, or even general happiness. Purring can be taken in multiple ways, depending on the pitch and length of the purr.

Long, low pitched purrs are usually of contentedness and comfort. A higher pitched purr is usually a sound of annoyance more than anything, and if the purr is short, then it can show fear or uncertainty. When the purr is extremely deep, it can often mean that romance is in the air! If different genders are in a close proximity, then it is often accompanied by a “mating dance” of swaying hips. Cooing is often done between a mother guinea pig and her young as a sign of reassurance, but can rarely be heard in other situations.

Guinea Pigs are very social animals. Ideally, your guinea pig should have a friend, another guinea pig. They really do like to live in pairs. But even if you have a single guinea pig, you want to provide some fun toys to give them some variety in their day.

Guinea Pig Sounds

One thing that is adorable about Guinea Pigs some of the sounds that they can make. You will often hear Guinea Pigs purr, whistle, and rattle their teeth.  They also make a really cute weeping sound.  Once you understand what all of the different sounds mean, you start to know what your guinea pig is trying to tell you.

The most common sound new guinea pig owner’s might hear is the guinea pigs typical whistling sound.  This is also referred to as a weeping sound. This can actually mean several things.

One might be that your guinea pig is hungry, or it could mean that your guinea pig is trying to tell you something. Some guinea pigs will sometimes get used to hearing the refrigerator open right before getting fresh fruits or veggies, and will associate the refrigerator with the treat.
