Guinea Pigs – The History and Origins of the Guinea Pig

Guinea Pigs and humans share a history of more than 10,000 years. The cavy originated in Central and South America. In the wild, their domain extended throughout Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The cavy was domesticated by the Inca Indians somewhere around 7,000 or 8,000 years ago. They were used as not only a food source but also as a sacrificial animal – sacrificed to the sun god – in religious ceremonies.

In the wild, guinea pigs lived in small groups or herds. For this reason, they are inherently social creatures and do not do well if kept in solitude. It is recommended that they be kept at least in pairs.

Cavies first made their way back to Europe on the ships of Spanish conquistadores during the 1500s. They eventually also came to Holland, England and France. At first, these pets were reserved only for the wealthy and elite. They were much too expensive for anyone but the rich. But their ability to reproduce so quickly soon made the European supply of guinea pigs swell. As the price fell, popularity of the little beast increased as they became affordable to the common people of Europe. It was not until the 1800s – more than 300 years after it landed in Europe – that the cavy finally made its way to the United States.

Grooming A Guinea Pig-How To

The best thing you can do is to give your guinea pig hard food to chew on: carrots and other hard vegetables, chew firewood or blocks, or even tree brushwood. If you do remark that your guinea pig’s teeth are becoming too long, then its essential to take him to a vet and get them trimmed down. Never try to lower guinea’s teeth yourself! Your vet will have the correct tools and experience to safely sleek the teeth to a typical piece.

Another tricky situation that sometimes arises with guinea’s teeth, particularly if they aren’t receiving all the vitamins they need in their diet, is that the tips of teeth may desolve off. This can also make it tough for them to eat. Take your cavy to the vet and feed him a softer diet until the fang grows back suitably.

Guinea’s mustache also needs to be taken care of commonly. Guinea’s with a longer coat require more grooming than little-haired cavies.

Choose Guinea Pig Cages Carefully!

Are you interested in having a really happy guinea pig? A proven way to make certain of this is to make sure your guinea pig has a nice clean home to live in, and that he has quite a lot of room run around!

Generally speaking Guinea Pig Cages really needs to be as big as your house space and your budget will allow. You don’t need to go overboard, but it is better to give your guinea pig more room than he needs than to give him less room than he would need to stay healthy and happy. As a guideline, your guinea pig cage should be between seven and eight square feet assuming you have just one guinea pig, and between ten and eleven square feet when you’ve got two Guinea Pigs. For each additional guinea pig in your cage you should have between two and three additional square feet of living space. If that sounds like a lot just remember that Guinea Pigs need lots of room to romp around and get exercise, and the more exercise a guinea pig gets, the happier he’s going to be. Without adequate exercise your furry friend will get fat, and overweight guinea pigs are more likely to develop health problems, and you do not need that to happen. If your guinea pig is lucky enough to have a 2-story home remember that any additional levels mustn’t be counted in providing the minimum square footage.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to find a good quality guinea pig cage at your local pet store. If you cannot find a cage that is big enough you can consider making your own. It’s not going to take you very long, and it can be very rewarding. Not merely because you will have a cage that your guinea pig really loves, but because it will more than likely outshine anything you might have purchased.

Guinea pigs really should be housed in cages composed of wire rather than glass enclosures because wire cages provide significantly better ventilation for your pet, and if a glass enclosure breaks it could possibly cut your guinea pig. Wood cages are easily chewed through and so are not your best option for your guinea pig cage.

How to Litter Train a Guinea Pig

If you just got a new guinea pig, you will most likely find that the pig is scared of you and tries to get away every time you try to pick it up. You should first know that this is something that all Guinea Pigs go through before they get used to their owner. This “getting used to” period can last many months, so don’t worry if it’s been a month or so and the piggy still won’t move very comfortably with you.

When Guinea Pigs are brought into a new environment, they are usually very frightened by it. Dogs, cats, and other animals are better at adapting themselves to new places as they are generally used to human beings. Cavies, on the other hand, have little experience with “giant” human beings and should be given time to adapt to their surroundings and to you.

During this time, you will find that the pig often curls up, or runs to a corner of the cage (or the room if you let her out). This is fine; what you need to do is provide the pig with a constant supply of fresh and nutritious food: vegetables, fruits, hay, readymade guinea pig food etc. Also make sure the cage is spacious and clean.

Guinea Pigs by Other Names?

Would a Guinea Pig By Any Other Name be So Cute?

Why are Guinea Pigs called guinea pigs? Is it maybe because they originated in New Guinea? Do they belong to the pig family? The answer is ‘no’, and ‘no’ again. So, if that’s the case, then why are guinea pigs called guinea pigs then? There are a number of theories that try to address the question of the unusual name.

First, the origin of guinea in guinea pig. One theory posits that the animals were brought to Europe by way of Guinea, thus leading people to believe that they had originated there. Another theory is the word “guinea” is actually derived from Guiana, an area in South America; albeit it remains unclear wether the misspelling was intentional or merely a corruption of the original name. A third theory suggests that guinea pigs were named so because when they were originally sold in Great Britain, they were valued at one guinea. A guinea is an old British coin with a value of twenty one shillings. Unfortunately, this theory is based on a common misperception, as the first guinea pig was described in 1554 by a Swiss naturalist named Konrad Gesner, more than a century before the first guinea coin was tendered.

There are just as many theories regarding the pig in guinea pig than for the origin of guinea in guinea pigs. One theory suggests they are named pigs because of the snort-like noises guinea pigs make when excited or happy. Another theory posits that they were named pigs because of their resemblance to small pigs, or because of their eating habits. Whatever the reason, the English language is not the only one that refers to “pigginess”. Scientists refer to guinea pigs as cavia porcellus; and porcellus is Latin for little pig. In the German language, guinea pigs are called Meerschweinchen (which is translated as little sea pigs). The origin of the name in German is probably because guinea pigs were treasured as an easily available and transportable source of fresh meat for sailing ships traveling long distances in the new world. Guinea pigs have a long history of serving as provisions. The Inkas treasured guinea pigs as a food source, but also slaughtered them in massed as ritual offerings to the gods. The Russian and Polish names for guinea pigs are similar to the German one, morskaya svinka and winka morska respectively; while the Dutch call them guinees biggetje (Guinean piglet). In the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark they are called marsvin, which combines the Latin word for ocean “mare” with svin, meaning pig.

Orwell Meets Vanunu and the Industrial Military Media Security/surveillance Complex

Recently Senator John McCain erroneously claimed Iran is training and supplying al-Qaeda in Iraq. McCain corrected himself after Senator Joseph Lieberman [of whom it has been whispered holds dual USA and Israeli citizenship] whispered in his ear, “You said that the Iranians were training al-Qaeda. I think you meant they’re training in extremist terrorism.”

McCain prefaced and ended with an apology “the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda, not al-Qaeda. I’m sorry.”

Robert Dreyfuss, investigative reporter whose latest article in The Nation is entitled, “Hothead McCain” explains, “If you thought George Bush was bad when it comes to the use of military force, wait ’til you see John McCain.”

The Spiritual Traditions of the Andes, an Interview With Doris Rivera Lenz – Part 2

Are people who come to you for coca divination often unwell?

If you ask me if people are unwell, the majority are unwell, in their spirit or mind, there are lots of problems today. They are particularly afflicted in the stomach, the solar plexus, and the belly button. It’s the place of emotional pain, and also where we are joined to life. This is what ayahuasca is, the rope that connects us to life.

What about people who sense that their bad luck is caused by someone putting a hex on them. What do you do? Can you send the hex back to its place of origin?

The first thing is to discover what is going on in the present. The wife had an accident, the husband was unfaithful, they haven’t got a job, the house is falling down… Then I look to see their capacity to accept a criticism, to listen to the mother leaf ticking them off saying: you have done this, you are insecure, weak, a drunk, or a prostitute. What is the story? Is it karmic or something that they are doing?

Taking Care of Your Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are a rather unique creature that also have a very interesting history. They, at one time, existed in the wild and they were also raised by Inca Indians in Peru. Several centuries ago, this unique animal was also introduced in Europe as a pet. Many people still enjoy having the guinea pig as a pet, both because of its gentle nature and because of what it is able to bring to a family. If you love guinea pigs yourself and would like to have one as a pet, there are a number of things for you to consider which can really help to make your pet as happy and healthy as possible.

As with most types of animals, your guinea pig is going to need to eat a well-balanced diet in order to remain healthy. Much of the commercially available Guinea Pig Food is going to suffice in this regard, but many people also like to supplement the Guinea Pig Diet in order to provide them with additional nutrients and some interesting eating. Feeding them alfalfa, hay, various types of sprouts and other raw vegetables from the refrigerator is always an excellent choice for these animals. Make sure that whatever you feed them, however, is pesticide free.

Interestingly enough, a guinea pig is unable to produce its own vitamin C as many other animals in the wild are able to do. Humans share this inability with the guinea pig, and just as you would want to supplement your own source of vitamin C, you would want to make sure that your guinea pig has a ready supply of it available as well. Sprinkle a little bit of vitamin C on their food on a daily basis, and it will help to keep your guinea pigs as healthy as possible.

The Truth Behind Creepy Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are one of the cutest animals on the face of the earth, they are plump little fur-balls that love to play and squeak. However some people say that they have creepy guinea pigs! This seems absurd to most, but the owners of the creepy guinea pigs find it quite frustrating and it is an incurable problem.

Ninety nine times in a hundred it is the owners own misconceptions that skew their vision of their pet to make it seem like a creepy guinea pig. They might see it as something that could bite them, or scratch them, or that it will be lurking around the house when they don’t know about it. These things and many more make people think that they have a creepy guinea pig.

The owners of the creepy guinea pigs are generally not the ones that think they are scary. The ones who get freaked out are most often the loved ones of the owner, like the siblings, parents, children, friends or anyone close to the owner, and because of this they cannot easily solve the problem by getting rid of the creepy guinea pig in question because the owner is very fond of it. For this reason, the only acceptable solution is just to stay away from the guinea pig if its presence is such a problem to the person.

Children’s Toys – Sylvanian Families Toys Are The Best

Toys provide an imaginary world for children and the right toys will help inculcate reasoning faculties and imagination in your children. Right from building blocks to clay modeling sets to character toys and board games, all the toys have their special importance in shaping and sharpening a child’s mind.

There are many kinds of toys children have a craze for including special character toys and accessories like Shrek, Star Wars, Hannah Montana, Baby Annabell, Peppa Pig and many more. Among these, the Sylvanian Family toys are the oldest and the most popular.

The Sylvanian Family Toys originally originated in Noth America and then Japan. They were made of the idea of anthropomorphic animal characters which was very popular back in the 1980s. The characters were made such that they could walk, talk, sing and eat like all human beings did. This was a greater attraction for kids, and they easily made an attachment with these characters, because of their similarities to the human beings and their way of living.

Give Your Pet Guinea Pigs Some Excitement!

I probably don’t need to tell you if you have pet Guinea Pigs how much they love to explore and how curious they are. But be conscious of the amount of time they are allowed to play and explore free of their cage. If they get just an hour a day or so, it still may not be nearly enough for them.  They could still need much more exercise and stimulation than their cage or an hour outside of it can provide. For such tiny animals they have nearly boundless energy and need plenty of ways to apply it.

Owners of pet guinea pigs usually have exercise wheels available to their pets in the cage. This helps them run and exercise, for sure.  But I bet their cage could be made more interesting for them making if some simple changes were made. By Adding platforms  to their habitat with different levels, tunnels, and bridges, they will have much more to explore. The more components and elements that are there to be explored and run around in the better for you cavy. Try and replicate a natural environment full of hay, sticks to gnaw on, and places to hide.

Change the configuration and placement of the parts of your guinea pigs’ cage. If it’s in a “U” shape now, make it an “L” shape or a “T” configuration. Put their food and water bottle in a different spot and move  their exercise wheel to a new place. Keep them engaged by hiding vegetable treats for them to find. The more stimulated your pet guinea pigs are the healthier and happier they will stay.
