A Guinea Pig's History of Biology

From Publishers Weekly
Like all the sciences, biology is rooted in observation, but in order to tease out the principles of reproduction and genetic inheritance, biologists needed to find plants and animals with fast breeding cycles—hence the popularity of Guinea Pigs, zebra fish and fruit flies as experimental subjects. Endersby’s history explains how such life forms have been put to use by scientists from Charles Darwin’s age to the present. But the flora and fauna are just a hook for Endersby, a lecturer in history at the University of Sussex, to talk about the scientists, and he’s often at his most winning delving into biographical details, like the friendship between science writer Paul de Kruif and Sinclair Lewis, whom de Kruif advised on science and medicine for the novel Arrowsmith. He’s also good at spotlighting small events that had sweeping consequences, like the 1847 repeal of a British tax on glass, which led to more greenhouses, which led to an outburst of botanical observation. Later chapters broach hot-button topics like genetically modified food and the backlash against animal testing. Endersby offers a fresh take and surprising conclusions (Mendel did not invent modern genetics) on familiar material. 12 b&w illus. (Nov.)

What is the key to guinea pig health?

What is the key to Guinea Pig Health?
Knowing symptoms when you see them!

Due to the fact that Guinea Pigs are not as vocal or as communicative as other larger animals, problems with their health can be trickier to determine and treat. One of the first and most important steps to ensure good Guinea Pig Health is to be as observant and aware as possible. If you notice a change in behavior, eating habits, sleeping, socialization or weight there may be an issue and treatment should be provided as soon as possible.

However, not all symptoms are so obvious, and many times the guinea pig will hide or find solitude when not feeling well. This can make it more difficult to spot serious symptoms and can result in the illness becoming more advanced. The most common Guinea Pig Health Issues are related to tooth growth, digestive problems and vitamin deficiencies.

Overgrown teeth or Malocclusion as it is called by professionals can lead to very serious issues and can become fatal to a guinea pig when not treated properly. The symptoms of Malocclusion are severe weight loss, excessive drooling, loss of appetite or a change in vocal behavior. To prevent your pig’s teeth from becoming overgrown, make sure to provide adequate teething toys and safe chewing materials.

Guinea Pigs Body Language and Sounds – How to Communicate With your Guinea Pig?

One of the guinea pig’s traits that really sets it apart from other small pets is its way of communicating with you and with other animals. Cavies have an array of physical and verbal communication methods that make it easier for you, as the owner, to get inside their head, see what their thinking, and provide them with what they need.

Because their methods of verbal communication are the most unique, we’ll start by discussing those.

Many first-time guinea pig owners have often heard rumbling or clacking sounds coming from their tiny creature’s cage but never really suspected that those noises were coming from their pet, but they are. In fact, a group of rowdy Guinea Pigs can get real noisy, real fast.

Guinea Pigs Training Guide – The Basics

Many people would be quick to call a guinea pig just another “dumb animal,” but that’s actually not true. Of course, when compared to a human or a dog, Guinea Pigs aren’t going to astound you with their intellect, but they are much more intelligent than the average person gives them credit for, as any guinea pig owner knows quite well.

For example, if you feed your guinea pig fresh vegetables right out of the refrigerator, it won’t take long for him to equate the sound of the refrigerator opening and him getting a tasty treat. His squeals and whistles will tell you that he wants what you’ve got in there.

Obviously, Guinea Pigs are trainable. They can be taught to walk on a leash (these are available at most pet stores) or to go to the bathroom in a certain area. Some have even learned to come when their owners call their name! Just like with any other animal, you must be willing to work consistently with your pet and to reward the desired behavior with treats, usually a favorite food. The guinea pig will then make the mental connection between the good feeling he gets from the reward and the behavior you want from him.

If you do plan on having your guinea pig on the floor a lot, then it may be a good idea to start litter training them early. You don’t want to set your expectations too high for this endeavor, however. Guinea pigs will still go to the bathroom throughout their cage and will occasionally have accidents on the floor, but litter training them considerably reduces the liklihood that this will happen.

Choosing the Right Guinea Pig

If you are thinking about getting a pet for your home, you might want to consider a guinea pig. Guinea Pigs, also called cavies, are lovable furry little critters that will bring you a lot of joy. In addition, Guinea Pigs can be a perfect first pet for children because they are easy to care for and more cuddly than a hamster and or fish. Here is some more information to help you determine whether a guinea pig is the right pet for you.

If you are thinking about getting a pet for your home, you may a first consider a dog or cat. These animals are perfect for homes if you have a lot of time to dedicate to owning a pet. Dogs and cats need a lot of attention and a lot of space. Guinea pigs on the other hand are just as cute as dog, cats, and they do not require near as much space or care. Many people love the idea of guinea pigs as first pets for children because they live a lot longer than hamsters or gerbils. In fact, a well cared for guinea pig can live up to eight or nine years. Once you own a guinea pig, you will be hooked by these cute, sweet natured critters.

When you go to the store to get a guinea pig, it is always a good idea to look at them carefully and choose them by their personality. Each guinea pig has his or her own personality. Some are more reserved in nature, while others are more outgoing. If you are choosing a guinea pig for your child, you want to make sure that your guinea pig can tolerate being held and petted. Guinea pigs are not known to be aggressive or to bite, but your child will have no fun with a shy guinea pig.

Give Your Pet Guinea Pigs Some Excitement!

I probably don’t need to tell you if you have pet Guinea Pigs how much they love to explore and how curious they are. But be conscious of the amount of time they are allowed to play and explore free of their cage. If they get just an hour a day or so, it still may not be nearly enough for them.  They could still need much more exercise and stimulation than their cage or an hour outside of it can provide. For such tiny animals they have nearly boundless energy and need plenty of ways to apply it.

Owners of pet Guinea Pigs usually have exercise wheels available to their pets in the cage. This helps them run and exercise, for sure.  But I bet their cage could be made more interesting for them making if some simple changes were made. By Adding platforms  to their habitat with different levels, tunnels, and bridges, they will have much more to explore. The more components and elements that are there to be explored and run around in the better for you cavy. Try and replicate a natural environment full of hay, sticks to gnaw on, and places to hide.

Change the configuration and placement of the parts of your guinea pigs’ cage. If it’s in a “U” shape now, make it an “L” shape or a “T” configuration. Put their food and water bottle in a different spot and move  their exercise wheel to a new place. Keep them engaged by hiding vegetable treats for them to find. The more stimulated your pet guinea pigs are the healthier and happier they will stay.

The Guinea Pig: Healing, Food, and Ritual in the Andes

From Booklist
This odd but enticing book presents fascinating information unlikely to be found in any other one place. The guinea pig, called cuy in Spanish, ubiquitous in the Andean regions of South America, is an appreciated food source that also plays a role in folk medicine and religious practices. The book’s abundant illustrations greatly contribute to points made in the text as Morales, born in Peru and now a university sociology teacher, explains in detail the natural history of the cuy, the methods of raising the animal, which ranges in venue from households to large farms, and the importance of cuy husbandry on local economies. And, to top it off, Morales also surveys cuy dishes. This visitation to Andean culture is as accessible to general readers as it is to students of Latin American civilization. Brad Hooper

How To Choose A Cage For Guinea Pig

The verdict on where to place your guinea pig should be made before you desire an enclosure so you’ll know right how much seat you will be running with, particularly if you will be custody your guinea pig within. Ideally, your guinea pig’s enclose should be at slightest 2 discharge feet per guinea pig, but the more topic you provide for your pet, the happier he or she will be. The height of the crate is not as important. Guinea Pigs don’t actually climb much because of their volume so 18 shuffle parapet should be high enough to keep them securely inside a confine.

The guinea pig owners prefer to have multi-level cages for their pets. While the addition of ramps and other levels may be fun and interesting for the guinea pig, it isn’t essential.

When most people get their Guinea Pig Cages, they generally go through a pet stockpile. This can be a mistake for some reasons:

3 Tips For Buying Guinea Pig Cages

Everyone loves a guinea pig. But a this lovely pet cannot be properly taken care of without the right pet cage. Your cute little friend needs a spacious and clean environment to run free, play, and be kept healthy in. Without a properly cage, your little buddy would run everywhere and possibly get into everything imaginable. He is more likely to feel safe and at home in the proper cage. We all need a little advice from time to time when choosing these kinds of things for our animals. Here are some tips to help guide you in making the right choice for your little buddy:

1. Consider the size that you are looking for. This should be the first thing that you think of when choosing a proper cage for your pet’s. All animals need to be active in order to maintain health. Like humans, animals need room to walk and run. A cage that is too small is not going to allow your little friend to do that. A cage that is suitable enough for your pet’s size, gives him room to run free and play in, and also fits where you would like to put it will be just what you need in a good cage.

2. Pet’s like to remain comfortable just like any other animal does, so bedding should be your next choice. They are going to need something to sleep on. While you are looking at your cage, think about the amount of bedding that you would like to purchase. Guinea Pigs like to hide underneath things, it tends to make them feel safe and comfortable. You can even buy them a small house to place inside of the cage. Since these are rather shy and nervous animals by nature, you will need to do everything you can to make sure that they feel safe. Be sure to leave enough room outside of the bedding for them to be able to run around in. Most bedding is made out of hay or towels.

Guinea Pig Cages – C

What are C&C cages and what makes them so popular? Let’s take a closer look at the C&C cage:

As far as we can tell, the original C&C cage design was developed (and made popular) a few years ago by an innovative Guinea Pig Rescue organization. This cage style was developed as a matter of necessity so that the guinea pig shelter could efficiently house a large number of pigs in a cost-effective manner. For this reason, to this day, the C&C cage tends to have a very low cost per square-inch of living space — in other words – C&C cages tend to offer a lot of cage for the money.

The mysterious name C&C originates from the two main materials used to construct this category of small animal cage: Cubes and Coroplast.

The frame and wire lattice portion of the cage is built from wire grids normally used in the assembly of wire grid storage cubes. These square wire grids are usually 14-inches long on each edge. This sort of shelving is often seen in stores or boutiques where clothing or other items are displayed in arrays of wire grid cubes or cubbies. Hence, the first C in C&C comes from the word cube.
