Pig Rabbit

What is the best pet for a 12 year old? Hamster, Rat, Guinea Pig, Rabbit, Gerbil, or a Dog?

I’ve had a lot of pets in my years so I could be called really experienced. I am also really mature for my age. I was wondering which pet I should get: a Hamster, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, gerbil, or a small dog? Please help me. I have had some of these before and I just was considering another one. Please also list some facts and persuasion, pros and cons about the pets. Thanks!

I think you should get a ferret. It’s something different and they’re really cool and interesting pets. They are very smart and can do lots of things, you can even walk them on a leash! They use a litter box too, which is easier than a dog, even though they require the same responsibility. Ferrets are nothing like hamsters or rats, they need to be played with for a long time everyday outside of their cage. Think about it, they’re a good decision.

2 rabbits
2 guinea pigs
1 gerbil
4 hamsters
7 parakeets
Several mice (not sure how many exactly – more than 6)
Several fish (again, not sure of the number)

Combo Pet

What do you think of this pet combo?

we got a kitten, Twinkle a while ago and it has been a great addition to the family but now my wife, who is an avid animal lover, has her heart set on a baby hedge hog she saw at the pet store. Is that combo possible? I just know I need to find some way to make it work because I don’t want to be the bad guy and my couch is not that comfy if you know what I mean lmao

Absolutely it’s possible. As long as you can stand it! lol. Just teach your kitten what is acceptable play with the hedgehog, (if you want them to interact that is) and make sure the kitten’s claws are nice and trimmed so there aren’t any accidents. Don’t forget your hedgehog has some natural defense that will teach your kitten a lesson if he gets too rough. Also, when setting up the hedgehog cage, make sure the bar width isn’t big enough for “twinkle” to get his/her paws into, and make a house at the back of the cage where the hedgehog can hide out if he’s feeling harassed. Make sure twinkle realizes that the hedgehog is an equal. It’s fortunate twinkle is a kitten too, it’ll be easier to train him.

Glider Ferret

Are my sugar glider and Ferret depressed?

I feel really bad for my animals and am just recently am taking action to bond with them a lot more. I’ve had the sugar glider for maybe a year or so and the ferret for less than two. I care a lot for them but realize I haven’t exactly been showing that. I feel real bad for keeping my ferret (which is suppose to be an energetic animal) in a cage all the time. And my sugar glider (which you’re suppose to spend A LOT more time with) he’s the same way. I guess just maybe, like if I start being around with them a lot NOW can they um….”forgive me” in a way?
Will they be bonded?
It may be stupid, but I keep thinking about how my poor sugar glider has pretty much ALMOST been lonely since he was a baby. Brings a tear to the eye you know?

I think if you start now, a bond can still form with your glider. Also, if you think you may not have time EVERY night, maybe consider getting him a friend? They are pretty much always better off with one of their own to play with when you’re not around…

Hamster Mouse

Is it ok to feed my hamster mouse/rat food?

I accidentally bought the Nutriphase mouse/rat food instead of hamster food. It basically has all the same ingredients as the hamster food but it has more protein (16% instead of 12%) and more fat (7% instead of 4%) Would it be ok to feed this to my hamster?

No. Mice and rats have a different nutritional need than hamsters. I do not feed my rats hamster food, because it does not have the nutrients that my rats need to be happy and healthy. The same would go for your hamster. The rat food won’t have what your little guy needs.

Owning an exotic pet can be utterly complex as they entail a different kind of treatment compared to general pets. Exotic pets are also more costly to take worry of because of their food and living requirements. Most exotic pets are best left in the wildlife where they can take heed of one another but when a person brings home an exotic pet, he must make confident that the pet is well taken problem of by a veterinarian.

Degu Cage

A good material to build a solid floor in my degu cage?

Im looking for a good material to build a solid floor in my degu cage. Right now the floor is grated and I dont think that is good for their feet. I was thiking maybe a sheet metal? Any suggestions well appreciated

Sheet metal would work very well. I’d just make sure no sharp edges are degu-accessible.
Also, I know people who have also used use kiln-dried pine boards, and then had old t-shirts/sweaters, and/or cardboard layered on top. Which didn’t last very long, since the goos would take the old t-shirts and bring them to the nest, and chew up the cardboard. xD Hah.

Small Animal

What type of small animal will eat houseplants?

I moved into a vacant trailor and now after a couple of weeks of living there, some small animal has eaten a small cactus and a beautiful fast growing ivy completely gone. What kind of animal may I be looking for?

Squirrels like cacti. They devoured my prickley pear cactus even with the thorns still on it. I was shocked.

The Furminator deshedding shampoo says it is enriched with omega 3 and 6 fatty acids but does it smell bad?

Im thinking about giving my black lab a furminator bath and the shampoo says enriched with omega 3 and 6 fatty acids but it says clean and fresh scent but im worried that if i get some on my clothes it will make them smell like omega acid or is it just a small amount

Omega 3 isn’t an acid like battery acid. It is a fatty acid like found in fish oil – greasy & the amount that is in that shampoo is tiny at best. Besides it is just shampoo & will wash right out of your clothes. Don’t expect extra de-shedding either.

Marmoset Monkey

How do I see the difference between a 1 year old male and female marmoset monkey?

I have a marmoset monkey who is 1 year old.The people we bought it from said it is female, but I am strongly having doubts right now.And to make it worse, everyone you speak to has something different to say. There are no experts around where I live, so I would really appreciate it if someone can help.

You may not really be able to tell for a little while longer. Sexual maturity is reached between 9 to 13 months in the male, and 18 to 24 months in the female so you might have to wait for sexual organs to “drop” in a male before you can tell either way… I used to have Spider monkeys. A veterinarian might be able to help a little better in your area.

What is a good rodent or small animal to have in a household with a cat?

My guinea pigs have passed on just recently and I am looking into getting another furry friend. I do have a cat( but she has never bothered my guinea pigs) so this means I can’t have something like a ferret, who needs to be able to roam the house. What would be a good rodent or other small animal to have in these circumstances?

I agree, get a rat. When you let your rat out for its daily jaunt, just close the door so the cat doesn’t get in. I like to put an old blanket out on my bed and let my girls run. Rats are self aware, which means they can think and have feelings much like we do. They’re smart, trainable (including litter box), and extremely clean creatures. The worst part is that their life span is so short, only 3-5 years, and they’re prone to tumors. I’ve found all of my rats to be generally healthy throughout their lives. I’ve only had to take one to the vet in all the years I’ve had them.
